There have been some really good answers up there.
Condoms on Sex Toys, Dental Dams and Rubber Gloves etc.
I would like to say if you are in a monogamous relationship then protection isn't really necessary (as a lesbian I've never used protection) however you may both want to have STD checks. Lesbians are very low risk in terms of STDs so if you are monogamous and both clean protection can seem pointless and some people feel it is less intimate.
If your using sex toys condoms would be good regardless just to be hygienic (some are dishwasher safe though)

i don't think female condoms are quite necessary, but using separate (and clean) sex toys, or new condoms when you swop, is one way. a dental dam is another: it is a square piece of re-usable (washable) latex used as a barrier during oral sex. with a little practice it makes little, if any, difference to the sensations. some women use latex gloves, but i think it's only essential when you have cuts on your hands, or chew your nails badly. also avoid the scissors position until you've both taken STD and STI tests. generally, swopping of body fluids should be avioded.
being faithful if you are in a relationship is really important, as your partner is unlikely to have protected sex with you if she trusts you. bringing home nasties is the worst kind of infidelity because you can risk your woman's life.
however, taking responsibility by being informed and honest about your own STI/STD status is the safest, since the vast majority of lesbians are ignorant about the chances of contracting a disease or infection, and thus don't use protection.

The same as everyone else has protected sex. Dental dams, condoms, rubber gloves, getting regular STD tests and not sharing personal toys. Really, the only difference between lesbian sex and any other sex is that there is no penetration.

(to the above commenter --- dude, guess what? dykes do a lot of penetration. sometimes clit into vagina, even. and fingers, hands, fists, toys of all kinds, some strapped on.)
1. using a barrier, such as a dental dam, during oral sex. it is put on the sexy parts of the receiver and the giver therefore is not making contact with bodily fluids
2. by using condoms on toys and changing condoms when changing partners. again, to not share or mix bodily fluids. new condom when changing from vaginal to anal sex, as well.
to be even more careful, rubber gloves for penetration.
and every person should get tested, often (six months) for std's. protect your body, its the only one you got.

The chances of getting HIV from ORAL is extremely small. BUT, the chances of playing with toys without a complete washing increases the chances greatly. IF you are playing with toys, then use a condom over them...Dental Dams can be used, but why bother. ??? Nothing is life is guaranteed, and your chances of being killed in a car are far greater than getting HIV from oral are extremely small.

female condoms, std tests so they know the other 1 isn't infected.
Lesbians actually have the lowest hiv rate since there is no penetration.
