The Empirical formula of two compounds are CH4. If molar mass of one is 32g/mole and the others is 48g/mole; then find out the chemical formulas of these compounds?
Its the tricky one, isnt it?

Molar mass of CH4 = 16 g/mol
32 g/mol / 16 g/mol = 2
The formula is C2H8

48 / 16 = 3
The formula is C3H12

These two compound do not exist

CH4 has a molar mass of 16.

A molar mass of 32 is 2x CH4 or C2H8
A molar mass of 48 is 3x CH4 or C3H12

Wasn't tricky at all, was it?

The only thing that has an empirical formula of CH4 also has a molecular formula of CH4.
