I'm assuming that by solve for a you mean get a by itself and not to actually figure out what a is. Therefore, it means you need to get a by itself so you have to get rid of everything else by moving it to the other side. To move them you do the opposite of what they are currently doing. Add 3b (because it's a negative so you're doing the opposite) You get 4a + 7 = 23 +3b. Now subtract the 7. 23- 7 = 16 so you are left with 4a = 16 +3b. The 4 next to the a means multiply so the opposite of that is to divide. You are left with a = 16 - 3b all over the top of 4 (which means divided by 4). You can leave it at that or you can simplify it. If you simplify it you divide each of the top parts by 4. 16 divided by 4 = 4 and 3 divided by 4 is 3/4. So you are left with a = 4 +3/4b. Another way to write it is a = 4 + 3b/4. All three mean the same thing.

Solve for a: 4a + 7 - 3b = 23
4a = 23 + 3b -7
4a =16+3b
a = 4 + (3/4)b
0r In slope intercept form:
a = (3/4)b + 4
So a depends on b. If you were to graph equation it would have a slope of 3/4 and intercept y at 4.

Since there are 2 variables, you need another equation to solve it completely.
However, you can solve for a in terms of b. Meaning a will not equal a real number, but the answer will have b in it.
4a + 7 - 3b =23
4a - 3b = 16
4a = 16 + 3b
a = 4 + 3/4 b

Hey there!
Here's the answer.
4a+7-3b=23 --> Write the problem.
4a-3b+7=23 --> Gather the a terms and b terms together and the constant terms together.
4a-3b=16 --> Subtract 7 on both sides of the equation.
4a=3b+16 --> Add 3b on both sides of the equation.
a=3b/4+4 Divide 4 on both sides of the equation.
So the answer is a=3b/4+4. The answer can also be written as a=0.75b+4.
Hope it helps!

4a - 16 = 3b
(3/4)b + 4 = a
It's simply an equation, there is no "a" without a "b"
