Al Qaeda comprises of less than 5% of the terrorist acts that are going on in Iraq today. Even though Bush is propagandizing that it is Al Qaeda that we are fighting in Iraq as mention 95 times in one of his speeches last week. It's sectarian violence from many factions that are going on. There is shiite against sunni. And, there's sunni against shiite. And, within those 2 tribes there are several factions attacking eachother and periodically Americans. this is something that cannot not be solved militarily. The Pentagon knows it, the Iraqi government knows it, the CIA knows it and the intellectuals, writers and scholars who know Iraq and go there periodically to find out what is going on are all saying the same thing. Even Westpoint military training school is saying the same thing. All of these entities are saying that our presence in Iraq is counterproductive. You're right about that. It is time for the U.S to leave and let the Iraqis take responsibility for their actions, for their country and for the government. It is not right for us to occupy this country. We've done enough for better or for worse.
BTW, the Sunnis won't allow al Qaeda to stay in the country. they don't like al Qaeda and neither do the Shiite who are the majority in the country. Once the U.S leaves, the Iraqies will get rid of al Qaeda and probably do a better job of it.
Secondly, there are far more al Qaeda in Pakistan, Indoneasia and Saudi Arabia than there are in Iraq right now. If they are more populated in those countries then why is Bush in Iraq trying to fight them? It makes absolutely no sense and it makes no sense to stay in Iraq.

Certainly Al Qaeda is that way in Iraq. But it is not their only motivation nor purpose. Don't forget they are not just in Iraq.
Others in Iraq do want us to leave. That is sacred Muslim land and we are seen as infidels who should not be there. Al Qaeda was a small band of radical Muslims largely in the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan and slowly growing in other places including the US, obvioulsy, but their exponential growth has come about because of the Iraq war.
You are right when you say only Iraqis can bring stability to Iraq. The people of that region have been fighting with one another and solving problems for over 3000 years without our help and rarely with any outside help. Why should things change now?

I like your reasoning, unfortunately it doesnt take into account the other factions that have interests in the region. Iran supports factions in Iraq because of religious ties and it wants to install a puppet government there and give it control of their sizable oil resources. Saudi Arabia supports factions there because of religious ties and it wants a friendly government there as a buffer between them and Iran. The kurds in the north are more closely aligned to turkey and want to have a sizable chunk of the oil revenues in the region which would give them a degree of political power that they have never before had. Unfortunately, someone has to referee this mess until the Iraqi government is able to stand on its own and we got the job. Once the regional government is capable of standing on its own and has a police force and army which can deal with these problems, then we need to pull out with all due haste. But you have to remember, historically it has taken a while to build independant governments after a conflict. Look at how long it took for japan and germany to begin self governing after WW II. There is no instant resolution to this problem.

There really was not a single Al Qaeda in Iraq before the invasion? I would bet against that, Bush fan, or not.

If al Qaeda was smart they'd tone down their attacks and lay low. Trick the US into thinking that things in Iraq are under control. Then as soon as we pack up and leave KABOOM! Step up and take over. But instead they continue to engage US forces, thus keeping us there to police the country. I don't know what their goals are, but personally I would rather fight al qaeda in Iraq then to sit here hoping that our government is smart enough to keep them from attacking us again here.

I agree with you. The comment that they didn't have any problem recruiting before 9/11 is patently false. The radical Islamic extremists gain notoriety for events like the USS Cole and the attacks of 9/11. Our presence in Iraq has drawn more to their cause. The NIE proved it - and that was developed by Bush's own appointees.

Hmmm, create power vacuum, al Qaeda has a safe haven and base of operations. Sounds great!
Then Islamist across the world will be freed up to fight those "occupations" in the Netherlands, Indonesia, Thailand, India, and wherever else they perceive the locals aren't representing their views.

Get out. Do you folks remember that movie THE Exorcist? Remember what the entity said? GET OUT! Well let's get out and send the Christians over there with crosses and holy water to exorcise the desert of Al Qaeda. Regardless lets LEAVE, CUT and RUN, VAMOOSE! Seriously we're not accomplishing anything there but losing American lives and filling the pockets of Corporate America and the politicians they support. The Iraqi people don't want us there. We shouldn't have invaded them to begin with. Can't you people see that they don't want a US government there and that's why they're not trying any harder to establish one? Why do Americans in their arrogance seem to think every one wants to be an AMERICAN?
Iltrix for President!!!
