You wont burn the grass by watering it. The reason why people say it's a waste is because the sun quickly evaporates the water. If you can get the soil very wet and moist you should be better off than not doing it.

I think you can water during the day, and it may burn your grass, but the BIG reason for not watering during the day is that SO much of it evaporates! Watering your grass during the day, while convenient is incredibly wasteful. Bummer! Best time is 2-8 am. Good luck!
By the way, I personally don't care about my lawn at all, so I water in the evening, whenever I remember. I don't during the day though, just because of the water evaporation.

If you water during the heat of the day plants will loose less water to transpiration, so they will be less stressed. There has been crop research done showing mid-day irrigation has a higher yield per acre due to lowered water loss stress in high heat. This works best in the home garden if you have drip or soaker hoses that deliver to the root zone because overhead sprinkling in a wind of more than 5 miles per hour wastes some water but at least they get water. With larger areas like lawns you really have no choice but to use overhead systems.
Midday is best for the plants not for your pocket book nor water conservation so don’t water any longer than necessary and as early in the day as you can. Just test the root zone moisture before and after watering for a given amount of time to know roughly how long to water next time, assuming conditions don't change drastically. Grass needs water to go at least 6 inches deep. Poke a hole to test the depth of water penetration after 20 minutes. Soil type or texture is a major determining factor of how much water a soil will hold, or how quickly a soil can be irrigated. For example, 1 inch of water applied to a sandy soil will penetrate 12 inches. It will move anywhere from 6-10 inches into a good loam soil, and in a clay soil it will percolate down only 4-5 inches.
Can water burn plants? I doubt the shape of a water droplet can match that of a magnifier lens long enough or accurately enough to burn anything.

the preferred time to water is before the sun is right overhead.
earliest in the morning is the best.
by doing this the water will have saturated the roots so the roots will not dry out as the sun is in full ray. the sun will draw the water out of the ground and into the air, but if you have watered early, the ground will be wet and the sun will not be able to draw up all of it so the flowers and lawn will not dry up.
they also say that while the sun is above and hot it will burn the grass while watering. however I have never seen this actually happen.
I water my lawn all hours day and night. and I have a very nice lawn.
ps. you are not suppose to water at night due to the water sitting for long periods of time supposedly causing mildew to the roots.
but everyone does that too.

The problem with watering in the daytime heat is not only that the water evaporates more, but also that during the hottest times of the day (usually between 11am and 6pm) the grass won't absorb water through the blades at all. To hold in water that is already inside the plant the little capillary-like vessels close up which makes it so that water also doesn't get inside the plant.

It won't burn the grass. It is less effective to water mid day because more water will evaporate is all. Early morning before 10am is best for watering grass as the water will have a chance to dry before evening. A lawn that remains damp over night is more prone to disease. But if the lawn is dying due to lack of water, you water when you can.

It depends on what time you water.
Watering at 12:00-3:00 is pretty much pointless. The sun is sop hot the water will evaporate before the grass has time to absorb it.
It's best to water before 10:00 or after 5:00. There are also sprinklers that you can set to go off. My neighbor has them go off at 1:00 AM.

Watering the grass during the day is useless, especially if it's really hot, because the water gets evaporated. Your plants aren't really getting watered.
