Because we overthrew a democratically elected leader in 1953, Mossadegh, and inserted a repressive, cruel tyrant-puppet, the Shah, who facilitated control of Iranian oil for the West. The revolution in 1979 wass to overthrow the Shah, and living under his tyrrany radicalized hatred for the west.
We overthrew Mossadegh because he intended to nationalize the company British petroleum, that is, take the resources of the land o benefit the people who actually lived there, the iranians.
So we, through the CIA, overthrew this democratically elected leader because we felt we have a right to that oil, not the people who live there..
U.S. bringing democracy, at its finest!
These are the facts.............
Edit for Castiglio, or whatever your name is... He was elected by parliament to BE prime minister - the Shah was hiding in Jordan at the time, run out of the country by his own people. He was brought back in after the people were subdued through CIA machinations...... What's up with the name calling? No place for that when arguing the facts, right my man?

Both the governments of Iran and the United States hate each other. I wouldn't say that the majority of the Iranian people hate America. (that also does NOT mean that they approve of the United States making threatening gestures to their government).
To directly answer your question... the US had supported the Shah of Iran through the 1960's and 1970's; they gave financial assistance to his regime and gave his governemnt some military intelligence/training and munitions. This boost strengthened his unpopular regime and gave support to the Shah's secret police that imprisoned politicos, religious people and various people that were tortured and held for indefinite periods of time without trials... The United States might have been involved and maybe it wasn't but they had to have known about these practices of the Shah's government and police. The shah was considered a very good allie during the Cold War because he held huge reserves of oil... this was not something that the US wanted to be traded to the USSR.
When the revolution in Iran deposed the Shah there was already a lot of anger towards the US for supporting such a tyrant by Iranians. Then when the US decided to allow the Shah to take asylum in America and sever ties with the new Iranian government (or freeze ties) it angered the new policy makers.

in the 50's we helped to overthrow their democratically elected government because he wanted to nationalize Iran's oil supply. we replaced him with a monarch, the Shah, that everyone hated because he was more concerned with giving oil concessions to foreign companies instead of letting his country have any of the profit from their own natural resources. This eventually led to the the movement behind the Islamic revolution and everything after 1979 is history.
just as a small point, a decent majority of the younger generations in Iran don't hate the US and are trying desperately to get out of the country. its just a very difficult and lengthy process, so most don't make it out.

"Iran" doesn't hate the USA, the current mullahcracy does. I'm sure you're going to start whining about "Operation Ajax", whaaaaaaa, but it does little to hide the fact that:
A) The US is very popular in Iran, especially in the educated middle class.
B) Mosaddeq seized over $1B in assest of from AIOC, and did have ties to the Tudeh party.
Thanks for playing!
Edit for tzagawd ********: Who elected Mosaddeq? Was the Shah within his constitutional powers in dismissing his PM?
Edit for bluestareyed: Same as above. Was your minor in socialism?

I think it goes back way back decades and decades .. including when we first deposed their duly elected leader to replace him with a monarch that would be friendly to us and sell us oil. ..there are plenty of chickens coming home to roost now from the last 60 or so years from the point of view of people from that region vesus americans and the British.
