LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. - Al Gore's son pleaded guilty Monday to possessing marijuana and other drugs, but a judge said the plea could be withdrawn and the charges dropped if he successfully completes a drug diversion program.
Authorities have said they found drugs in Al Gore III's car after the 24-year-old was pulled over on July 4 for going 100 mph in his Toyota Prius.
He pleaded guilty to two felony counts of drug possession, two misdemeanor counts of drug possession without a prescription, and one misdemeanor count of marijuana possession, the district attorney's office said.
Jaime Coulter, senior deputy district attorney, said Gore's sentencing will be continued until Feb. 7. If he has complied with all the conditions of the diversion program, the sentencing will be continued again for another year, with charges possibly being dropped in 2009.
"At that point, he will be able to withdraw his guilty plea as if he never entered it," Coulter said.

Paul, in most jurisdictions second time offendors would see some jail time. And, he should have been ordered to undergo substance abuse treatment rather than some drug diversion program.

The two tiered legal system in this country is a joke. Theres the rich and famous and those that can afford the best lawyers and then theres everyone else that gets jail time.
The legal system in this country is beyond redemption in my eyes. Everytime I have gotten a lawyer my life has gotten easier. My wife got tagged for speeding the cop was so close behind her she couldnt see his headlights. The guy was harrasing her by following too closely so she would speed up. If we didnt have a lawyer we would have lost the case. Only the lawyers know the details of how to get things dropped, subpoena evidence etc.

As long as you have a good enough lawyer, and enough money, then, yes, we would get the same treatment. Fact is the prisons are overcrowded as it is, why add some poor little minor possesion flunky to an already overcrowded system, and have us have to pay for it to boot?
I think if you aren't a serious badguy, then there should be some leniency on you, BUT having said that, if he had hit anyone while under that influence, toss the book at him.

I don't know, really it doesn't seem like he was carrying much in the way of quantities. I don't remember Rush Limbaugh serving any jail time either.
"Deputies who pulled over Gore said they discovered less than an ounce of marijuana and a variety of medications, including Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall."

Didn't this EXACT same thing happen to George H W Bush when his drug addicted son was arrested?
I didn't hear of W doing any time, as a matter of fact the records were sealed, as were most of the Bush families dirty laundry including all ofthe companies that had business failures due to having George W around

He's probably getting preferental treatment, but don't forget that most first time offenders (I don't know if this is his first arrest or not, just guessing) of all ethnic and economic backgrounds only get counselling and etc.
What happens the second and third times he gets caught will give you a better answer, I'd say.

If it were you or I and it was a first offense, we probably would have gotten a diversion and sentencing would have been continued until Feb. 7.

It may seem so on the face of it, but that's actually a fairly standard sentence in California. In NY, he'd be on Riker's Island by now.

And how many times did the Bush twins get arrested for drunk and disorderly? Another case of political pot calling the kettle black! Everyone knows that money talks, and the guilty walks! I don't care what party you belong to!
And if you love your child, and don't want them in trouble? What party does that place you in?

Skip jail, I would have been shot by now. Celebrities and almost celebs rarely spend time in real jail. What's the point of arresting them? We should just issue flags like diplomats and unless they kill someone, just smile and waive.
