I would highly recommand getting something small with a huge battery life. If your campus has high speed internet, make sure you get something that is 802.11g capable.
If I were to get a dell laptop today. I would start with the Inspiron 1501, and select the Build Yours link. If you go with the Protection Plan, don't get anything above the DellCare Value package. Stay with the Mobile AMD Sempron processor, unless you want to do a lot of gaming. Keep the Vista Home Basic package. You definantly want to get the 1GB of RAM, you'll notice the differance! Keep the 60GB hard drive. Keep the 24X CD Burner/DVD. Keep the integrated audio. Upgrade to the 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, you'll need the extra battery life. Keep the Dell Wireless card. If your campus doesn't have wireless networking, you should strongly consider getting the Dell Wireless Broadband card. You'll probably need a printer, however you might want to look around instead of getting one from dell. I would recommend a printer / scanner. Don't get the Anti-Virus stuff. Download the free version of AVG virus protection, and the free version of Spy-bot. Windows comes will a built-in firewall. If you want something compatable with MS Word, you can download a free version of Open Office. Word is better, but Open Office is free. I would recommend looking at different sites before getting the Digital editng software. If you get a digital camara it will usually come with software of it's own. I would personally recommand avoiding the extra software. If you don't already have a mouse and a flash-drive, I would recommend getting the Core Bundle. You'll need a backpack or carrying case. If you have a large campus, I would recommend going on-line and looking for a backpack. Don't get anything else.

u sure u want a Dell computer? XPS notebooks are a good price, but as far as troubleshooting, encountering problems, be prepared...there is no help from tech support.
also look at laptops/notebooks at bestbuy, compusa, apple, circuit city, hp.

Depends on what exactly you will be using it for. Whatever you get though, if you get it from Dell, make sure it is one you won't need tech support for because their tech and customer support are horrible.

I doubt you will need a very high performance system so go for something nice and cheap. 1gb of RAM is a good idea if you are going to use Windows Vista (it will run on 512mb but 1gb is recommended).
