Because he was just a figure head with the majority of the vote from age over 50. He also tried something he called Reaganomics which screwed thousands out of their family owned businesses and helped big business get bigger shortening entrepeneurships from increasing and less competition on the national market. Thousands lost businesses and homes due to it. Reagan was an easily manipulated puppet and with failing mental capacity he was a choice candidate for the 80's. But he was a great cowboy actor.

Ask someone in Eastern Europe.

Dimwits here will claim "He had nothing to do with the fall of Communism", but the Reagan Doctrine concentrated on a "rollback" of Soviet infuence, a shift from the "containment" of the Truman policy. Reagan actively funded (and armed) anti-Communist movements across the world. See coming Reagan statue in Poland, in "Ronald Reagan Freedom Square".

The Reagan Doctrine essentially prevailed over the Brezhnev Doctrine, which accounts for the mass of former Soviet Bloc "revolutions" in 1989 and after.

What it comes down to is that Reagan had a lot of superficial appeal but the facts don't support him being a great President:

Reagan was elected to a good extent based on perception that he would be a strong President, while many people blamed Carter's supposed "weakness" for the Iran hostage crisis. Then when hundreds of marines got blown up by terrorists in Beirut in 1983 (still the greatest US military death toll in a single incident since 'Nam), he didn't respond. Later, his Admin. (supposedly without his knowledge) sold weapons to Iran, the same nation that held our people hostage only a few years earlier and ironically, one of the main reasons Reagan was elected in the 1st place.

There is plenty more including the S&L deregulation that led to a huge financial crisis in the late 80's.

best President by far.

Great vision.

Obviously some mistakes are made, but when you consider the job and hindsight, the mistakes were minuscule.

Dont believe the "for the rich" crap. Reagan drastically incresed the earned income credit.

Of course for those who refuse to work and better themselves, "for the rich" is a battle cry and an excuse.

You wouldn't be asking this question if you were old enough to live under Jimmy Carter.

Reagan gave this country it's spine back and put us back on the right track.

He just didn't do a very good job. He got lucky in a few areas, (people give him credit for the collapse of the Soviet Union, but any President could have managed that, it wasn't something that happened as a result of U.S. actions, but as a result of the actions of the leader of the Soviet Union) but other than that, he did nothing to help the country. His economic policies were terrible(to use Bush Seniors words, they were "Voodoo Economics") and he pushed the U.S. farther into debt than any other president up to that time(and set a precedent of the national debt being a permanent feature).

It just wasn't a good presidency, no matter what others will tell you. In many ways it was similar to our current administration, yet somehow people still support it.
