Whats wrong with my car? 97 Plymouth, its jumping and the check engine light flashes when it jumps. HELP?

Ok my car is a 97 plymouth breeze with a 2.0 Engine...it has been jumping/jerking as you are going down the road regardless if u are pressing the gas or not! The check engine light flashes whenever the car jumps/jerks. Also when u first start the car the RPM cage will jump like u are pushing on the gas and u can hear the car make a noise as if u were accelerating- while that is happening if u change into reverse or drive the car will die completely. Also it has recently started not wanting to start! =( my car is always doing something but now no one can figure out the problem!! I let it sit an drove a relative vehicle and the first couple weeks after it had sat it appeared to be better...drove perfectly .....now its doing it again!!

I have changed the air filter, oil- oil filter, were are going to do the spark plugs this week, I have put engine cleaner thru the gas, gas cleaner....umm...the transmission fluid has been checked....
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

The reason the check engine light is flashing and the car is jumping is because engine is missing and the computer has detected a cylinder misfire. A misfire is the only thing that will make a check engine light flash, the reason being is that they want to instill a sense of urgency into the driver so they get the problem repaired before the unburned fuel going down the exhaust melts the catalytic converter cores. You need to have the codes retrieved by Autozone or someone else that has a scanner to find out which cylinder is missing and then repair the problem, it is most likely either spark plugs or plug wires going bad.
