They're misinformed and they're manipulated by Republican party leaders and talk show hosts who know how to appeal to the worst in all of us.

I am an independent conservative and I think you question is misinformed. I know many republicans and not only are they very well informed, they are not hostile. You should not base you opinion on an entire political party of people based on what you read online.
