In a sense we are in World War now. Al Quiada operates in many countries and attacks in many countries. It seems to be on a war against the west in general and the US, England, and a few others specifically. And, it is a war we cannot afford to lose since their goal seems to be the utter destruction of the western way of life.

Sounds like a World War to me.

A new world war will be the begining of the end of the Human Race. Reason, because Nukes will become involved. Not only has the Nuclear Club grown since the original members (US, USSR, UK, France and China) formed the non prolifiration pacts in the 60's, the goverments that have even a limited capacity for Nuclear strikes number some 'rogue' states that have unstable leaderships and have already shown they are willing to use them if need be. Some of these countries include North Korea, Pakistan, India, Iran, Isreal, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Africa. Let alone the former republics of the Soviet Union that have broken away and formed more independant states.
In the late 90's and early 00's the black market sales of ex Soviet wepons, including tactical Nuclear Battlefield Technology was going on and the Western Intelligence service where trying to keep tracks and stop some of them, but we can be sure they slipped the net in some cases.
On top of that, the building of a small 'dirty' bomb, is not that difficult. It is amazing that there has not been a terroist incident using one of them yet, depleted Radio Active material is availiable in most Scrap Yards in small quantities if you know where to look.
On top of those wepons, you then have the Smart Wepon vs Dumb Wepon, as seen from Desert Storm 1 and 2, the technology has risen with stand off wepons to destroy infrastructure of the enemy, however when both parties have these wepons, then the destruction will be multiplied. Once that has happened the ground troops must move in t take and hold the ground, all well and good, but this would involve a larger force than most countries can produce with their National Armies, the problem these days is the conscription of the genral populace into the force, a soldier, sailor or airman, is no longer just a grunt head strong gun ho automaton of the past, the average armed forces person has to learn a wide range of skills, technology and equipment demand intense training and you can no longer do that in a few weeks or months of square bashing, drill and de-humanisation. By the time they are ready, the world could have been fried.
In short if it ever comes to a conflict of large powers, I am sure the old adage of M.A.D. and the 1 day war are still valid.

The next big fight will be between the religions. They're doing everything possible to turn the religions against each other. Just watch the TV, which is not there to entertain us, it exists, along with the rest of the media, to condition us. The only hope of preventing the hundreds of millions of deaths that the next world war will obviously generate, is for the American people to discover that Osama and Al Qaeda had nothing to do with 911. Read books Americans, and not the pro-official story 911 books either. There is no evidence at all that Al Qaeda did it! Everything that they have presented so far could EASILY have been made up. There is also a MOUNTAIN of evidence that the real culprits live a lot closer to home. Read books, because the media cannot be trusted, no matter how convincing they sound. Yes, the next massive genocide is nearing, but it can be stopped by the people learning the truth. There is much info even on the net.

Only by joining in a North American Union with the US and Canada. The science fiction writers have been postulating that one for a long time, and frankly, I never have understood why it doesn't take place. Both Canada and Mexico have states and provinces which are divisions that would be maintained, and they would have representation in Congress the same as the other states. The whole would clearly be greater than the sum of its parts, because all the money and energy now wasted on immigration would be a thing of the past. There would be only a very narrow border with other countries and immigration could, as far more appropriate, concentrate on being administrative authority at airports and seaports, and forget this whole wall-building madness. All three countries have advantages and disadvantages, and the three of us united into one large union could be a worthy trading partner with a euro union. It would be a healthy and prosperous nation.

what a question, hopefully not in my lifetime - You must not sit and ponder things like this because these thoughts are the roots of depression.
Instead think how to make the most of the life you have been given. Enjoy each day and do your best to ensure that as u fall asleep each night - you consider your deeds of the day and pray that they were kind and not hurtful..
Don't be Selfish - spiteful - or nasty... Its not easy to be caring and thoughtful but we have to try.
Like many of the other answers stated we are permanently at war ...but lets try and let it be a war of our conscience.
We are all selfish its part of being human and we all attack if we are hurt or if our family is hurt..
Take care of your self and your mind try to enjoy peaceful thoughts...

Well, in less than 10 years Iran will be at war; they are provoking Israel by stating thing like "Israel doesn't have the right to exist," and "Israel must be removed," and "Israel must be driven into the sea."
And, to top it off, Iran is developing a nuclear program? Iraq did that in the 70s and Israel hammered Iraq.

We're already in it. It started with the revolution in Iran, and was followed by a series of terrorist attacks and the rising of radical islam. There are your two sides in this religious war; islamic fanatics vrs. everyone. WW3 is already over 20 years old by my count. UNless you count everything before 9-11 the lead-up to the actual war.
