Use a debit card in ATM's, check with your bank what it costs and to make sure it will work abroad.
It should not cost a lot, token money only. If it costs more ask for a different debit card.

American Express is not much liked in Europe, to the point that some shops will not accept it at all.
Mastercard and Visa are the most used.

Credit cards are good for paying higher bills, like hotels, and for emergencies.
Mostly it cost a lot more to get money from an ATM with them.

Change only a little before coming, just enough for the first day, keep all your money in your bank account.

I don't know about using credit cards but I do know a lot about exchanging currency. There are a few ways to do it. You do it at the airport in some places, there are also currency exchange places in most cities and then there are also usually just a lot of dudes on foot who will exchange money for you.
