Smoking has got to be the stupidest activity a runner could do, short of cutting off a limb.

As runners go, I'm about a million years old. Actually I'm in my 50s however. Anyway, I quit smoking about thirty years ago and about the same time took up running. I had played tennis before I decided to begin my running career and was otherwise in good shape. My speeds for 10ks and so forth (I've never run a marathon) dropped steadily for about eight or ten months as my legs gained stamina and my lungs cleared of cigarette debris. I might add that I never really became fast and only could average about a 6:30 mile pace. I entered some races years ago (I liked the t-shirts) and occassionally would come across runners who did smoke.
I agree with another person who said that smoking is about the dumbest legal thing a person can do. It can rob a person of health, it costs money, and it makes a person's clothes stink. And this is testimony from an ex-smoker.

A running smoker - Hmmmm isn't that like one of those oxymoron's? I mean you have to be able to breathe in order to run.
