For the sake of arguement I'am going to assume that we are discussig Christianity's concept of God. An all-knowing, all-powerful, all good being. The problem with this theistic approach as you pointed out is the problem of evil. The following philosophical arguements dispute the claim that God can be omnibenelovent (All-God) and for evil to exist at the degree it does.
P1. If there is a God that being would be All knowing, All Good, All power (All PKG) for short.
P2. If an All PKG God existed there would be no evil in this world.
P3. There is evil.
Conclusion, hence there is no God.
* There are a couple problems with Premesis 1 and 2.
1. Attempts to define the Nature of God. But as I said for the sake of arguement we are considering the Christian belief in an All PKG being.
2. This premises assumes that if an all PKG existed there would be no evil. But why?
One good argue that there is a necessary amount of evil necessary in this world to make soul's strong (Soul building Minimum) I.E. You might not want to shed your child from all the evil's in this world because when he/she grows up they will definetly encounter some evil - therefore sheliding your child from any and all evil you make him/her weaker in the long run. Perhaps a little bit off tough love is necessary in certain situations. However if that is the case with God's childern (humans) Then the question becomes why does evil exist at such a great degree.
Revised Arguement.
P1. If there is a God that being would be All knowing, All Good, All power (All PKG) for short
P2. If an all PKG existed then there would be no more evil than necessary to make souls strong (Soul Building Minimum).
P3. Evil in this world greatly exceeds the necessary amount to make souls strong (Soul Building Minimum)
Conclusion, hence there is no God.
The following arguements do not provide suffiecient logical reasoning to say that God does not exist. However, they do imply that the christian belief of God being and All PKG being is not reasonable. The question is not why is there evil in this world. The question becomes why is the evil in this world at such a great degree? God could not have stop the sperm and egg that made Hitler from fertilizing?
It's fair to reason that an omnibenelovent God would.
I always like to keep in mind that often times when people are debating the concept of God. They are at times debating over "Thier Idea" of what God would be like. Does God exist and Does the concept or idea of what you perceive to be God exist - are two seperate questions that should be stated as such.

Because we don't love us. If we did would we build and sell a house on the San Angeli's fault or allow homes to be built where tsunami's have been occurring since recorded history? Immediately you might say that cause and effect and physics smite us.

I think we have misunderstood and misused everything of our life by surrendering to the application of those religious myth stories as we have.
We do not admit that life is essentially cannibalistic and fiendish, and that biblical God "loves" us in His own harsh and merciless way and He also demands of us that we shall not name Him in vain but that we shall love Him "with all our heart with all our body with all our soul", and also fight against the infidels and exterminate them in His name, in order to satisfy our own need of loving Him in our blunt presupposition that He almighty God needs to be loved by us His nasty creatures here on this Earth.
"God, etymologically is a raging ever mysterious Beast, a violent thunderous Spirit, that we by the second commandment are admonished not to name in vain else His thundering/lightning rage might strike us prematurely for having been so imprudent/impudent to put into discussion His almighty acts. The definitive consequence for us would then be for our soul to be fetched by the firm helpers of ferocious ever grinning Satan and so mercilessly hurled down into the ever scorching fire of perennially burning Hell.
There is all that suffering everywhere around us here in this World because life is essentially cannibalistic and all the individual life-expressions want to survive and prevail at the expense of all other expressions of life.
We should forget all about God loving us or we loving Him and so we should sincerely strive to contrive new and brighter paradigms of life and so organize ourselves in such a way that while fighting against each other and against everything else in this World our behavior should as much as possible be kind and fair, and we should always strive to cause as little as possible suffering to others and to all the expressions of life that we know about.

I have always wondered that. If God is a loving God, why is He also a vengeful God? For example, if you worship another God, He sees fit to smite you.

We create our own suffering. It is how we handle the suffering that determines what type of person you are.

The bottom line is that why does not matter. We matter and how we treat ourselves and others. I'm sure God knows this and is trying to teach us how to treat each other.
