My local fish store sells them for $1 each of 12 for $10. They "jumbo" variety are about $1.50 each. Jumbos are just a little more mature and slightly bigger than the average neon.

This is why:
1. They are hard to breed.
2. More colorful and bright animals can be sold for more simply because people will buy them for the price.
I agree with you about how silly it is on how much they are. They like to be in "schools" of 5 or more, and they cost about $2 each, so that would be $10 just for 5 little tiny fishies!
But they are actually not very hard to take care of, they are a very hardy fish. They can live for quite some time for a fish, and grow to be over an inch in length.

I paid like 4 or 5 dollars each for mine. I too wondered why they weren't like a dollar like a gold fish! But they are easy to take care of ( except they are messy, as in getting tank dirty fast)

because petstores now they are popular.
i buy neons and cardinals at wholesale for .10 cent a fish.
So when you see it at 2.99 (common by me) per fish, thats how petstores make money.
My bettas are .25 cent ea. even for crowntails. At petstores, 3.99 and 5.99 .
So the reason why they are expensive, is the store has to make money.

Because they are not very easy to breed and raise. The fish farms can't raise as many as they can of other fish, so the price is a bit higher.

I don't see where you came up with them being hard to care for. They are one of the easiest for me. Here, they are only like $1.50-$2.00. I don't know why they are so expensive where you are though.

They're not that expensive...they're like $1.50. Maybe they're harder to get ahold of where you live?
