I'm not positive what you saw, but it's certainly not an egg sack. Odds are very high you have a male betta as females are far less common in the market. All of the bettas sold in little cups ( the one's with the long fins) are males. Odds are high your betta was constipated actually.

You will know if your Betta is a male. It will have BIG fins. The females never have those big pretty fins. The way Bettas raise babies is scary. I'll tell you how this happens.

You do not put a male and female in a tank together to do this. You take ALL gravel out of the bottom of the tank and seperate the tank with a piece of glass or plexiglass, placed diagonally across the tank (like front left corner to back right corner).

Put the male in one part, female in the other.
The female starts to grow eggs inside. Male watches through the glass and acts like he wants to attack.

The male will start to build a bubble nest on top of the water.

When the female is ready, (FULL) and the nest is made, you take out the glass and the war begins. He will rip some of her fins and tear at her like he is going to kill her. He's not. He will wrap his body around hers and squeeze the eggs out. Then he will dive down and get the eggs and blow them into the bubble nest he built and keep wrapping around her and retrieving eggs until he has squeezed all of them out. When he is done, take her OUT OF THE TANK. He will take care of the nest and the fry until they are 10 days old. At that time, take him out as he will start eating the fry. The fry are now old enough to eat the food that is sold for them and are on their own. That's about it as gruesome as it sounds.
I raised them for many years and tried all the suggested methods. This was what worked best for me

Fish Egg Sac

Betta fish don't typically produce egg sacks, they make bubble nests (yup, a nest out of bubbles floating on the water!). If you see one of those with black dots... you should talk to an expert.

http://www.betta-talk.com has tonnes of info about betta fish breeding and taking care of babies.

bettas don't have egg sacks -- they lay lots of individual eggs and put them in floating bubble nests. here is a site on breeding bettas with pictures --

fyi bettas need 2 parents just like you.

Bettas don't carry egg sacks, they build bubble nests and lay the eggs there. I have no idea what you saw, but I'm sure it's harmless.
