When I saw the rest of your question, you answered the same as I was planning to answer.
I think it is stronger, not better.
Tyranny is the reason why.
Religions tend towards tyranny and justify it as God's will. Islam is a prime example. Witch hunts by religious fanatics are other examples.
Our founding fathers gave us a government with LIMITED power to prevent tyranny.
Socialist leanings gradually move power from the people to a more and more powerful central government.
Power corrupts.
BEWARE!
Keep our government's power LIMITED.
Since Money is Power, keep your money out of the hands of the central (Federal) government.
LIMIT TAXES as well as legal authority. Permit freedom OF religion, prevent freedom FROM religion. Our Constitution disallows the ESTABLISHMENT of a religion as part of our government.

christian fundamentalism began with the razing of the temple of Serapis in Alexandria Egypt. Following the Council of Chalcedon it was determined what books were Christian and what books were apocropha. secret jews resisted christian fundamentalism for centuries. fundamentalism and democracy are both very very weak
a human being will pretty much do anything it wants, and the laws of nature have more to do with anything than any ideologies
supression, fear, tyranny, ideology, none of them work very well because people resist and die and a new generation comes along. but just like applied socialism and applied communism were failures, so is applied democracy.
if you want to see a failed democracy in action, just research the reign of terror in rome during the time of marc antony and how he killed cicero and destroyed varros papers
we would have a roman dramatist like sophocles and euripides if marc antony had not proscribed varro
varro has a magnificent grammar on the latin language.
unfortunately the bulk of it is missing
marc antony destroyed the enemies of the state
when power shifts, enemies appear
both are vicious.
read your history and you will know
if you want to be a good person, practice tolerance
tolerance is the only future

i do not believe - in fundamentalism you all have the same beliefs based on the same religion but in a true democracy you could have all kind of believers which a overall blending of these beliefs should make you stronger.
