I'm currnetly treating my three goldfish for fin rot with Maracyn-Two. This is the second day they've been on the medication and the water is getting really cloudy, so much that I can't even see the background I have for them. Is this normal, and will it clear up after the medication is done? Also, is there anything else I should be doing while my fish are on this medication?

I have a great filter, so it is not a problem with filtration. My water has never been cloudy before, only when I started using this medication.

Cloudiness is normal with maracyn. Just make sure that you are following the instructions well. Dont put too many tablets in if your tank isnt big enuf. It should be one tablet per ten gallons. Except on the first day. It will eventually clear up after you are done treating the fish. After the fish are back to health you can then do a 25% water change. Maybe a lil more if the water is really cloudy. You dont have to do anything while treating ur fish except watch them and make sure that they ARE getting better. Because if they arent then you need to try something else.

Yes, that's normal with this type of treatment. It will clear up eventually, but it can be an indication that the ammonia level is high as well. Maracyn -2 will kill the bacteria responsible for fin rot, but also kill the bacterial responsible for the nitrogen cycle in the tank and that will lead to an ammonia spike. Keep a careful watch on the ammonia levels in the tank and change water as directed on the medication to help remove the ammonia.

In most cases the best way to control ammonia in a tank is to do a water change, however due to the medication, that's not a good option for you as you would also remove the needed medication. I would suggest you use Amquel to detxify the ammonia during the treatment time and once you have completeed the treatment use water changes to control the ammonia until the tank cycles again.

How big is your tank? Make sure the water is clean, or it could be causing a new cycle to begin (bad water can cause fin rot in the first place). I have never seen that medicine cause cloudiness. Can you take your water to a pet store to get tested? I would also put a little melafix in there to help them heal, and some salt.

its somewhat normal but it sounds like you might not have adequate filtration. the cloudy is usually bacteria that are thriving because you have killed off the bacteria that fed on the bacteria that makes the water cloudy. better filtration should take care of the cloudy bacteria.

fyi i have found the best med for fin rot is frequent partial water changes. 20% every couple of days usually clears it up.

They all treat different things. I have no clue what they treat, but for instance maracyn might be for fin rot and maracyn two for ich or something. Hope I helped!
