I remember learning that when they used to do surgery without anesthetic, the person would pass out pretty quickly, and some things will produce so much endorphins you won't feel it, but what are the different reactions on the entire spectrum of injury? Does it vary by person?

I've met a fair number of shot/stabbed people in the ER. Pain levels vary - some are screaming, some are calm. Don't know why the difference exists.

I can't answer this from my own experience, but let me tell you what happened to my grandson.

His buddy was showing him his new rifle. When he pulled it from the closet, it discharged. My grandson said he felt an electric thrill, as if he'd touched a hot electric fence. He thought no more of it until he was on his way home and felt a pain in his side. He touched it and there was blood.

He was very fortunate. The bullet traveled all the way around his abdomen without touching anything vital. It came to rest just under the skin and was easily removed in surgery.
