if you don't have the box or manual anymore, just go to the manufacturer's website. it will have info on each of their motherboards.

Check your owners manual. If that doesn't work then just turn off your machine, unplug it, open the cover, and look on the motherboard for a model number. Then look up that model number on google and find out what kind of socket it is. But chances are if your motherboard is more than 2 years old it probably wont be an LGA775 which is what all Core 2 duos are. Or if your processor is an amd it wont work and you would need to get another motherboard. One that supports Intel not AMD.

If you have the manual look for it in the supported CPU. If not then go to their website: look for motherboard links: type in your motherboard model: Look for specification:
Some sites offer a shortcut.. CPU supported list for a specific board.
