I think beginning in 2009, MLB should cut out Interleague play because it takes away the excitment of the World Series. The All-Star Game should not count in determing the World Series. The team with the best record should have home-field advantage in the world series. There should be only four divisions, AL EAST AL WEST, NL EAST NL WEST and there should be 8 playoff teams and have a similar format like basketball. Have the season start next to last Monday in March and end the next to last Sunday in September, so there will be more playoff action and cut back on spring training. What do you think of this proposal?

I agree on interleague play - not only does it take away from the world series but it cuts into the games played against their own league. It was exciting for a while but now it's old hat.

There is no way that the all-star game should be linked to the WS. I agree that the team with the better record should have home field, just like in every other sport.

I'd keep three divisions and a wild-card. It seems to work OK. I like having 6 division races and a race for best second-place finish. If by 8 teams in four divisions you mean that every second place team is an automatic playoff team, I don't like that. I also wouldn't want to reward top two non-division champs because that could mean a third place team could get in from one division. I like more emphasis on winning a division in a 162 game season.

Interleague play is great if you have a natural rival like in NYC, LA, Chicago, DC area or the Bay Area. Do you really think a Toronto-Milwaukee interleague series draws fans to Miller Park?

I'm a Phillies fan, and I would much prefer to play the Cardinals, Pirates & Cubs more often. These teams were in the Phillies' division for the better part of 100 years, and now we see them, at the most, 7 times.

Keep the divisions the way they are. Keep the season the same length. Get rid of the All-Star Game's importance in determining who has home field advantage in the World Series (or if not, at least allow the best players to play, none of this "1 player from every team" stupidity). And please, eliminate interleague play.

I'm a fan of interleague play and don't mind seeing the All-Star game determine home field in the World Series. Your ideas have some merit and "best record" for home field makes sense. I also like the playoff format proposal. The races would be more like the old fashioned pennant chases but even better. But most of all I like seeing the season moved forward to start and end earlier. I don't like all the cold weather games in October and even NOVEMBER deciding a summertime game! Nice post.

Agree with: All-star game not counting

Disagree with: everything else

and here is why

Interleague play generates more revenue for the teams and league, and brings out spirited rivalries (NY, LA, Chi)

having only 4 divisions takes away Central rivalries like the cubs and stl, white sox and twins, tigers, and indians, etc. Plus it also makes it tougher on teams who are forced to travel more for series

and 8 playoff teams per league (AL & NL) is absurd
there isnt enough time to play that many games. to go from 16->8->4->2 takes awhile. the NBA and NHL can do it because they play indoors. weather conditions are not a factor

you cant have the World Series being played in late November or god forbid early December!!!!!

but as for the All-Star game not counting i back you up 100%. The team with the best record deserves home-field, and in the event of a tie go with the most runs scored during the regular season as a tiebreaker

I agree with you on the cutting out inter league play. I hate it! It does cut out of the excitement of the World Series. I think that the All-Star game should not be a factor as to which city gets the home field advantage. But I don't agree with cutting out the Central division. Nor do I think that they should start any sooner than they already do. You must live on the West coast or down South were the weather isn't so crazy! Our opening day got snowed out!

Inter-league draws crowds, so MLB won't do a thing with it...why not North America versus The World in the All-Star Game. I like the three divisions, because the fourth one - the wild card contenders - emerges about this time.

Swingman is exactly right. I won't reiterate what he said but he's right on on ever single point. Why do you think NBA and NHL playoffs basically go by without anyone noticing? Because the format is too long and people lose interest.

Are you a national league guy? I like the way it is now. But, a shorter season would be nice. I really like watching inter league games though.

You are wrong. Interleague play limited is great! You should leave well enough alone.
