Sin. According to the Judeo-Christian tradition we were initially created with immortality and were intended to live forever in the presence of God; but with original sin we succumbed to temptation (remember Adam and Eve and the Snake and the apple?) and God placed a curse on all mankind and made us mortal, he then designed The Law as a way humans could earn immortality but because we all sin no one is able to be perfect enough to earn their way into heaven and so God promised to send a Messiah who would free us from our sins and give us everlasting life... Christians believe the Messiah has already come and Jews are still waiting...

FYI: you might want to read the Bible b4 you criticize it... the Bible does not offer mankind plagues, wrath etc.... the Bible offers freedom from such things...

I never believed that God was the cause of plaque, famine or planetary changes. If humanity would learn how to work with these situations instead of "manage and control" the world would be in better shape.
My Mom, a staunch baptist would never give to the missonaries. She always thought that stomping on anothers culture and way of life was a sin.

The WORLD offers us famine, volcanoes, death, plagues, and pain. No matter how hard we try, these things will always exist. In reality, religion is the only promise man has that these things will ever end, or that one day we won't have the suffering we are forced to endure on Earth. What's wrong with that?

Well, if you believe in the Christian or Muslim version of a single deity with their Holy books.. then Life is what stands between Man and God.. die and you'll find him in the after life :)

As for me personally.. I believe a persons journey to find God should begin by looking in at themselves rather than looking to others to tell them who God is.. but that's just me.
