I think of the sheer bigness of the universe. How mind-bogglingly big it truly is. The human brain cannot simply begin to fathom how staggeringly big it is.
I think of how I'm looking into the past, of how for all I know half of the pricks of light I'm looking at are actually long gone, and that I'll never in my lifetime know that because the light takes so long to get here.
I think that if, someday, we do decide to try to go to one of those stars, it will be hundreds upon hundreds of years before we get there. That, unless we find some other way of transporting ourselves, entire generations of astronauts will be born, grow up, and die on spacecraft that will only make a tiny fraction of the journey there. How would we know for sure that anybody born on one of those crafts will want to perpetuate the mission?
I think of how many variables had to be true on earth to produce life here, and I think of the billions upon billions upon billions of other planets that could exist elsewhere, how unlikely is it, really, that we are the only life that exists in the entire universe. I think of how futile our efforts really are to secure some infinitesimal fraction of a hunk of rock hurtling through a mostly empty space. How many people have died trying to secure that infinitesimal fraction? Is it worth it?
I think about whether the human race will still be around millions of years from now when our sun is dying, and whether we'll have the ability then to do something about it.
Who are we? Who am I? What right do I really have for existing? What am I doing to justify myself? What more could I do?
Is it even worth it?

I'm thinking that we, the human kind, know NOTHING! All our progress is like a little wimpy thing, compared to how much of the universe is unexplored and not understood. We have barely made it to the moon and Mars..
The starts are beautiful and watching them takes me out of the "city" mind frame..it;s relaxing and it puts stuff in perspective.

I am always awestruck by the immensity of the universe, the depth and vastness. No matter which way you look, it goes on and on.
I have always wondered just how mankind on earth will be changed on that fateful day when we make contact...and I pray it will be friendly.
I think science fiction has blown the angry alien theme out of proportion, but there is no guarantee that the next planet we find that is inhabited will be any LESS screwed up than ours.

I think of how small we really are, and how lucky I was to be the one sperm who got in the egg.
