Just want to hear from anyone who had this done and what their results were. How many had a false positive or know someone that did? I had it done on Friday so I have to wait about a week they said for the results.

Okay I had 2 neg. My 1st was fine so the results were correct. I'm 23 weeks with # 2 it was neg. I expect him to be fine. Now my sister's test came back positive with both her kids she had an amino which is more accurate it showed neg. for downs and trisomy 18+21. Both her kids were fine. From what I understand if the test will is 90% correct when it's negative. But only 70% correct when it's positive, so if it's neg. then the baby is probably fine only a small % of babies will test neg. and still have a defect. The chances are higher that a baby does NOT have a defect but for some reason will test postive anyway and in that case an amnio will likely rule that out. Amnio's are 90% accurate in finding defects, so if you get a positive blood test and a neg. amnio the it's safe to assume the baby is defect free. Try not to worry i think you'll be fine!

I waived this test because I have a few friends who had false positives, and they didn't want to do an amnio since it carries a chance of miscarriage and so they just worried about it until the baby as born. Also, I have worked with 2 babies with Downs Syndrome whose test came back negative for Downs, so the parents were totally shocked. Through a sonogram you will know if the child has spinabifida. or the heart defect that comes with Downs syndrome a lot of the time, so that was good enough for me. I would never risk a miscarriage by having an amnio, so there was no point for me to get this test. My daughter was born totally normal, and I plan to waive the test again for this pregnancy.

im 23. My AFP came back saying that I was 1 in 116 for a downs baby. Scared out of my mind, I had the amniocentesis done. Everything was perfectly fine. Given the choice, I would chose simply not to have the test next time around, it's simply riddled with false positives.

I had one done with my son and again with this baby. Both came out positive for Down Syndrome. They offered us amnios but we declined...before my son I had 3 miscarriages and didn't want to take the risk. Plus, the AFP has a high rate of false positives. My son is totally healthy and all of baby girl's ultrasounds show she is perfect as well.
So, even if it comes out positive, don't worry too much. You'll just get more ultrasounds than normal...and who doesn't love that. LOL.
