The greatness of the Beatles, in my opinion, had something to do with the fact that both Lennon and McCartney helped neutralize each other's "excesses" (Lennon - over-introspection; McCartney - over-"poppiness"). Most people, I'd assume, are going to answer that Lennon was superior to McCartney, but if one were to list the top 20 or so Beatles songs, alot would be McCartney songs. There are also those great classics that both contributed to, i.e "Paperback Writer," "Eleanor Rigby," and, perhaps the greatest of all Beatles songs "A Day in the Life." (In thinking about it, I think I like "Let it Be" and "Hey Jude," better than any Lennon song).

What also made the Beatles so incredible, with respect to these two, were besides being great and innovative songwriters, Lennon and McCartney were both great vocalists - as the lead or in harmony with the others. Listen to their best solo work as an example, such as "Imagine," and "Maybe I'm Amazed."

I'm a bigger fan of Lennon. Lennon was a true indvidual and he took risks. He fought for what he believed in and challenged the government. Paul did some good songs with the beatles but his solo work is terrible.

I don't have a preference, both were incredibly special together and separate. Both wrote incredible songs that changed the world of music.

I don't like ether of there music by them shelf's. They wrote better together. Paul's soft writing with the hard stuff from John together made it so good.
