If they do, then why do so many published books get bad reviews? And why do so many successful books have a hard time getting published?

J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 different publishers! I bet they're still kicking themselves over that decision.

i dont think so. i dont know that much about the steps of having a book published but i read online that its really hard to find an agent and publisher and theyre idiots too.
heres a story to prove it:
a person took one of Jane Austen's books and just changed the character's names. no one he sent the book to noticed. he pretended he wrote it and wanted to get it published and the people he sent them to mostly said "We're looking for something different."or "We don't feel this will become a best seller". not "dont plagurize (sp?)".

true story.
not my story.

Publishing is a tough business. There's no surefire way to know which books will be successful. But a book doesn't have to be a bestseller to be worth publishing, it just has to make more than it cost to publish. Most books are never reviewed at all. There are lots of stories like Rowlings'. Every publisher wishes they had a nose for the next hot new author, but it's really hard to predict.

Publishers decisions on book publishing is one part pride, one part prejudice, and one part greed.

They don't base their decisions on what will be popular or a good read, but more to the point, on trends and fads.

Many published books don't always make it, and so many get awful reviews--even though some are good.

But I've never heard of a successful book not getting published.

Unless...

You mean a good book not getting picked up by agents or publishers?

Publishers are in the business to publish and earn profits. It's all economics to them. Yes, some publishing houses not accepting future best sellers might bite their tongue and anguish for a moment, but they move on to the hundreds of manuscripts on their desks waiting to be reviewed.

Every author has a rejection file the size of Detroit's phone book. Persistence and patience, with continual submissions done perfectly is the way to go.

Publishing is essentially like gambling, and like poker players, they don't always know when to hold 'em or when to fold 'em, but they do make quite a bit of money in the end.
