A close friend and I are trying to break into the acting business, we are finding auditions and making plans to travel to California, but we were wondering on average how many auditions it will take to finally land a role, anyone care to lend their expertise?

The two other answers are great. I would just add that acting is a field where 98% of the people in it are unemployed at any given time. For every star there are hundreds who struggle in the field. But struggle is good, and acting is very worthwhile profession, and you should enter it for the right reasons. Do reach for your dreams, but have a plan "B" in place.

You don't mention whether you are looking at film, TV or theatre. Keep this in mind: Lawrence Olivier was one of the greatest stage actors of modern times. He did a few film roles, but is noted for his work on the stage. Years ago I was reading his obit, and noticed he had left and estate valued at something around a million dollars to his family and others. A million dollars. At that time Sylvester Stallone had just signed a $12 million dollar picture deal. Film or theatre? NOTHING can replace the experience of working in front of a live audience. But film will pay better.

There is no way to tell how many tries it will take. I got cast from my very first audition, but I had a good agent and I had tons of experience. I was 40 years old and had been acting since I was in jr hi school. I was ready. I was prepared. It is going to depend on your readiness, your preparation, your skill level, and your look. All casting is done by look first and then by talent. I would like to know what sort of auditions you are finding, because there is no such thing as open auditions for principal roles in films. So, if you want some real help with your career, write me at kencosp@aol.com and tell me all about yourself and your acting background. I mentor aspiring actors for free.

There is no "average." It all depends on you! It doesn't matter if you're ugly or pretty, a good actress or a horrible one, it all depends on what the casting directors are looking for.

Ron Howard had to go to 53 auditions before he got ONE callback...which ended up not amounting to anything. Ron Howard is now a famous director who has made numerous movies.

It's actually a matter of luck, too. If you happen to be exactly what they're looking for, then chances are, you'll get the part. Sometimes, even when you feel you did your worst, a twist of fate will also get you the part.

Good luck on what you're doing, though!
