i think while some of the names are stupid and sometimes just plain weird, some are unbelievably cool. I kno 2 in particular that are just awesome. I mean, someone will definetly stick out in ur memory if there name is like Dakota, (a guy name, after the indian tribe) and Xerxes. Xavier is persian for wise, and lets be honest, would u rather have an ordinary name? (ie, "Jessica" i kno 6 different people with that name in a small town. "Ashley" 4 people with that name.) but ur right, some are just plain weird and stupid.

There is a huge difference between using a nice, less common name and picking an off-the-wall-just-plain-weird name, or a common name and spelling it weird (my two babynaming pet peeves!).
Please, if you want a "unique" name, just don't pick a name that's in the top 75. There are a lot of really cool, cute names out there that someone can choose from, without going overboard.

well i personally like unique names because of my plain common last name. i feel if i give my child a name that is different (something not many others will have) it will help them stand out. My last name is Smith. so if i name my boy John i really think he will have more trouble later down the road where there are 20K more John Smiths out there to get him confused with.
Also i like unique spelling for the same reason. now im not saying name your child Bob and pronounce it Michael but just switch some I's and Y's or C's and K's it make a other wise boring drab name look interesting. at least to me. and trust me i know how many negatives i will get for saying all this it is just how i feel.
now i don't plan on going all the way crazy. on one post i saw James spelled Jaymz. now i like out there names but it was a little too out there even for me. it's just something i feel strongly about and i do believe it will help my son and/or daughter out in the future. in a sea of Aidan's and Madison's they will be Maximilian, Wesson, Anastasia, Nikolai, Tatiana, Arabella, etc...
Well that's my rant Bye!

My daughter is 14 and when I had her, her name was "unusual" its Savanna..Rather common now
My son is 14 months old his name is Trey..apparently very common where I now live
My godchild's names are are you ready for this: Corinthia(after my best friend her mom). TyVerinay, and LaMarion
My best friend named her daughter Diamond Marquise her brother named his KeyAsia
My good friend named her children Miracle and Arlington
I knew a little girl may she rest in peace whose first name was China her last name was Bowle. There was also a little boy in the NICU with my daughter 14 yrs ago named Justin Tyme.
I do agree parents are going over board. I look at it like this if your kid is going to have a hard time spelling their name or if it has the potental for another kid to make fun of the name all through school or if it screams STRIPPER find another name.

I want my children to have fairly unique names. My husband has a very unique name (Kael) and I love it. When I was in school, there were 5 other girls in my grade with my exact name (Kristen Ann, thought one girl was Kristin Ann, and another was Kristen Anne), and I got very very sick of being called "Kristen O." all the time,ot to mention I was always confused with all the Christines, Christinas and Krystals, so in high school I started going by Ani, just because I was so fed up with being Kristen O,
I want my kids to have names that are unique enough that they will not run in to other kids with their name. I want them to be individuals.
I think there is a fine line though, I would like to name them things that are unique or rare with out them being a name that people will go "What is that?"

I agree. Parents do not consider the outcome when the child starts school or reaches adulthood. Research shows that companies have a tendency to hire people with common names rather than with unique names.

Yup! Changing up names is something that happens through time and I fully understand that. It should be over time, not suddenly naming your kid 'Flag'. I'll admit, there are some names I do like that aren't classical, but they aren't freaky. However, butchering and misspelling (yes, I HATE Kaytelynne) a name so ridiculous drives me up the wall. Somehow spelling a name differently makes the kid unique? Call me crazy here but....aren't all kids unique in their own beings?

It goes both ways...I grew up with 3 Aarons in my class out of 100 kids...it gets confusing. But my mother's name is Marietta (not pronounced like the city) and her whole life has been frustrating because people can't spell or say it right. My name is fairly normal and people still screw it up.

I agree! I think there is a lot of cute fun unique names to choose from without being weird. I think about some of the names parents choose and wonder how that child will feel when he/she is an adult.

Some of the unique names are cute but some are just really bad.
