Tell them that it's your passion - it's something that makes you happy, and you love to do it. If you're anything like me, you feel at home when you're writing a story. You immerse yourself into your characters and your setting and the events in your stories yourself; it's like traveling to your very own world. Try comparing your love for writing to the passions of other people in your family (e.g., if your brother loves baseball and your parents support that, compare it to that.) Really, just dig deep inside yourself to find out why you love writing, and tell your parents that! Writing is a wonderful gift, and I value it over athleticism or wealth or anything to that magnitude, so I think you should really continue to do it! Good luck, and keep on writing!

Ok, your family is probably concerned about your efforts to make a living writing books. If that's so, they are right. Less than 1% of writers make a living writing books and ALL of them had day jobs until they made a good sale.
I've done the Starving Writer thing and it's not pretty. Your best career choice is actually in education. You get a steady job, access to school resources, and three months off to write every summer.
Now having said that, don't quit writing. Writing is a much healthier outlet than alcohol or drugs. It helps you deal with stress and lowers your blood pressure. You even get natural highs when you finish a difficult scene.
Oh, and it costs a lot less than any other form of entertainment you can go for.
And you can inflict your stories on family members every Christmas with home-made Christmas presents. Chances are they will never read them so you get off cheap.

If you're not writing trashy, perverted stuff, then I don't think you should give up. Do what makes you happy. Have you published anything? If you haven't, would you like to? Damn it, then go for it! Try a commercial publisher or a subsidy publisher. If you currently publish, then keep at it. If you're not doing anything wrong while doing what you love, then you shouldn't let anyone stop you from going forward. As long as you keep both feet on the ground and don't make this your primary career goal, I think it's perfectly okay. Good luck!

Writing is a fine hobby. However, do they have legitimate concerns? Are you, perhaps, counting on being an author for a career? (most writers need a day job still). Or are you neglecting normal duties in order to pursue writer? Or are you "publishing" in vanity presses and thus accuring large debt?
Find out the specific concerns that your family has so that you can address those concerns specifically. But there is nothing wrong with writing (and many things right with it).

If you have the desire to write, do it.
Find a group or even a Yahoo group to get encouragement to continue writing. It isn't an easy "job" but it can be satisifying. And you could always take up the work of a freelance journalist.

Tell them that they can't tell you not to do something that you like to do, since it isn't a bad thing. You aren't hurting anyone (including yourself) and you aren't doing anything illegal. Why do they not want you to write anyways? An no you shouldn't stop writing books if its something you like to do. You have control of your own life. You choose what to do with it, not them.

Don't stop writing...even if you're never published, writing is therapy. Plus if it's your dream let no one stand in your way. Maybe you can't share that part of yourself with your family right now. People can be discouraging (haters) without even knowing it!

If it is right for you to write books, do so. Why do they NOT want you to write? Take a chance; Columbus did and look what he discovered.

Remind that there's tons of things you could be doing instead of writing a book. Say you could be out partying, doing drugs, but instead you're doing something that you love, and they should support you. Good luck.
