Barry Barry Barry, If he was on a team like the cowboys (90s) or any other team, how about the Broncos? We would have a different all time rusher, and if he would have stayed as long as Emmitt he would have crushed Sweetness's record. Emmitt Smith wasn't half the back Barry Sanders was. Barry Sanders greatest of all time hands down and hats off.

Barry Sanders and Shaun Alexander
Barry is only about 3000 (3,086 to be exact) yards away from the All Time Rushing title and played for 5 less seasons (Do the math, that equates to only 600 yards a year when he averaged 1,690+ yards a season). That is including 1000 yards negative in his rushing career. Barry had the best moves of any rusher to ever play. That being said, he wasn't the best running back of all time, when you take into things like receiving and blocking ability.
Shaun was the only person on the Seahawks for a long time, and it isn't really too much better now. Overall power, speed, and running ability, Shaun is much better than Emmitt. Emmitt was only as good as he was because he played for a 3 receiver set offense the vast majority of his career. Not only did he play for a 3 receiver set offense, they were good, real good. That helps keep 7 or 8 people out of the box (defensive lineman and linebackers).

What is the rest of the team? Barry Sanders was one of the best and probably the BEST listed. LDT has a line, just like SHAUN Alexander and Emmitt Smith did. If Sanders would have had the blocking Emmitt had he would have had the record.

Hear me out here...LT scores more than Barry Sanders mostly because of the teams they got to be on..the Chargers have a good line to LT...the Lions didn't give much to Sanders...but he worked it. You put Barry Sanders in LT's offense and oh dear watch what happens...As good as LT is and as much as his career is going to shadow every other running back number-wise...Barry Sanders remains, in my opinion, the best running back ever, and with a line, he could have had 31 TDs also.
It'd rather have Shaun Alexander sometimes, but not often enough. Emmitt Smith was an great athlete, and does have the career rushing record and over 150 TDs on his career. He was a TD machine and had mountains of yardage, something Alexander is working on right now, should he rebound from his foot injury...or Madden Curse, however you look at it, he'll get back on track and maybe in 5-6 years I'll change my answer...but not right now..
Smith and Sanders until LT and Alexander prove they're better. (Not very likely...LT has the best shot)

Awesome question.
I believe I would take Barry over LT because of the same reason many people have already mentioned, Barry did it without much of a team. He had a below average O Line. The Lions also had a below average passing game, which allowed opponents to play against the run first, often playing 8 defenseive players in the box to stop Barry. Also, the Lions were often playing from behind, which forced them to throw rather than giving the ball to Barry.
LT is a great running back, one of the best ever. But he has the benefit of a good team around him, which Barry never had.
As for Emmit or Shaun, gotta go Emmit. He has proven himself more than Shaun. Maybe Shaun will end up being better, but as of right now, it's Emmit.

I would take Barry Sanders and Shaun Alexander in their prime to play on my team. I would use them like the Chicago Bears used Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. I would use Barry Sanders for hige pickups because no one could change direction like him and Shaun Alexander on the Inside and as a reciever because he's fast and has soft hands out of the backfield. I wouldn't want LT with Smith or Sanders because i wouldn't want 2 fast semi-strong backs playing for me because then the D would know what i would do. I would use Sanders on the outside, and alexander on the inside. Even with a bad O-line i could win a lot of games with that 2 back system.

Sanders and Smith. If Barry had half the offensive line that both Tomlinson and Smith have/had for their careers, he would have twice as many yards as he does now. He did some much the work by himself. He was absolutely ridiculous as a back.
