I asked my doctor this question about painting - she said that latex paints are much safer nowadays than the old oil based paints. However, she said even with latex paint, I should only be around it while pregnant if the room is extremely well ventilated, and to wear a mask as an extra precaution. Even then, she said it's best to err on the side of caution and have someone else do it if possible.
Also, if you have an old home, you need to be very careful about removing old wallpaper or paint - a lot of old paint contains lead which can be very dangerous to your baby.

Painting is 100% safe! The paint we have available to us this day and age is not full of lead like the paint our grandmothers ( even mothers) had to deal with.
Wall paper is another story all together, a few things need to be considered when doing anything like removing wallpaper while your pregnant.
How old is the wall paper and the house?
It may be newer wallpaper but maybe it's been put up over a wall painted with lead paint? Or if the paper is old then you need to worry about both the adhesive and the wall in which the paper was stuck to.
Another thing to consider is the work involved in removing wall paper, I help a family member out occasionaly when she has a big job ( she does remodel, you've prpbably seen the show
"Flip this house" that's what she does) and I tell ya I ALWAYS get stuck with removing the freakin wallpaper! It does not matter how old the paper is, if it has been hung with a backing appllied first it is not coming off with out a fight! No matter what trick you think you may know of to get it off easier, it's just not comin off.
I have used everything known to man to get this stuff off~ from gramy's tricks of the trade to calling the proffesional wallpaper people, it is awful! The easiest ( I use the term easy lightly) way is to score it then use sponges ( bid huge ones) to soak it with fabric softner and water then let it sit for 10 min and remove paper, good luck with the backing though!
So~ with all this work envolved you need to consider if you are healthy enough in your pregnancy and that you will be having to do things like climb up a ladder and reach way above your head. It is a dirty, sweaty, hard job!
But if you are determined to get it done then wear a mask ( a dust mask or painters mask) and latex gloves and you should not have to worry about what is behind the wallpaper.
Girl, make your hubby do it for ya! If you are alone in this then take up a collection at your church and pay someone else to do it!
There is always some handy man at the local church looking for work!
Good Luck to ya sweetheart and enjoy that baby while ya can! B-4 U know what happened they grow up and away!

It's perfectly safe. At five months me and my husband painted the kitchen, dining room, and the nursery...I couldn't stand the white walls for some reason. I had a weird bout of nesting around that time too. Just make sure that you open all the windows to let the fumes out.

If you are maintaining a perfectly healthy pregnancy, there are easy ways to rid of wallpaper. Using a mix of fabric softener and water can break it down quite well. Wear a mask, keep the windows open at all times during your painting/de-wallpapering and I don't think your doctor would have a problem with it. Again, just double check it with him/her and let them know what you plan to do.

This is something to talk to your doctor about.
You two will see f you have any risk factors. Such as reaching above your head. Or holding a wieght of paint.
Many doctors have a list of can do's.
Each women is different. Some have more risk then others.
Play it safe. talk with her/him and if you get the ok make sure you have plenty of help if you fall or something.
( i moved my livingroom couch around by myself and painted. I got in trouble with my doctor.)

I wouldn't because some of the older glues used for wall paper contain asbestos and painting creates fumes that can be dangerous to you and your baby. If you can get a friend or family member to help you and you just direct them it would be better.

When the wall paper and/or paint is removed, please stay out of your house for at least a few days. Talk to your obstetrician first. A fetus can be far more vulnerable to environmental toxins than an adult.
