Hmm, I have fixed a number of laptops with slow startup. It's funny that people come to me with hugely powerful super-laptops and mine loads up quicker when it is very underpowered by today's standards.
The first thing to do is download and run CCleaner and EasyCleaner.
CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
EasyCleaner: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
With these, you can also edit the Startup log without using msconfig. EasyCleaner's startup option lets you edit/change the startup options very easily. It also tells you what programs they are, so you can remove programs from the list you don't want to run at startup, and can be sure not to remove programs that are meant to run.
Remove any unnecessary files and check the registry with both. EasyCleaner finds things CCleaner misses, so be sure to scan with both.
Then, remove Norton AntiVirus if you have it installed and replace it with AVG or Avast! Use the Norton Removal Tool to do this.
Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff
Avast!: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Also, run Spybot and AdAware:
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
AdAware: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007-Free/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

The slow start is definately caused by the loading of all your programs. Change it so they dont all load, just the most used you can still access the rest from the all programs start menu and your computer will boot up much faster. Also set anti virus and spy ware not to run at system start up but on demand only.Start with the av&spy ware first. The second time you reboot is when youll see a time differance as the first time the new configuration is being changed

Go to Run and type "msconfig". Then click the startup tab and uncheck all the programs you don't need running. As for your question, of course the heavy duty programs are going to slow down the computer. But some of the heavy duty programs aren't needed at startup, so uncheck them in msconfig and if you do need the program, you can always just start it manually.

You could try clicking start menu, then run, then type in msconfig, then a box will come up, in the box click the startup tab and un tick everything in there that you don;t need running at startup but leave all computer security, anti virus etc checked.

Stop the startup programs from starting at startup. If you know which programs are starting up, go to the options or prefrences and tell it not to start at startup. You can run msconfig from the run box then click startup to see a list of programs that start with windows startup

its slow due to many reasons check it yourself -
one due to lack of space in the memory
second due to virus affected heavily
or pragrammes installed with error.then always you need to see how long have you been using the laptop ?if its more than 3 years high time you dispose it in a proper manner and get a new one than not trying to repair it you get full peace of mind free of cost one year and all programmes updated and no worries and no headaches .....

You've got too many programs on it, get rid of what you don't need and the laptop will speed up. Everyone knows that silly
