Hi i have a 39 gallon tank that has been cyclying for 1 1/2 months. I don't have any fish in it yet but would like to get some soon. Are german blue rams too sensitive of a fish for a beginner? and should i get another type of fish first? any advise would be appreciated. thanks!

I wouldn't suggest Rams as a beginners fish simply because the need very particular water quality and most new tanks cannot support them well. Here's a great article about the needs of rams:

If you have had no fish in the tank and have not been providing a source of ammonia, your tank has not yet begun to cycle. Here's a link in cycling a tank in case you need it :)

When I first got my tank up and going my starter fish was angel fish and I had him for 2 years and he got sooo big... but he died from ick and I was so upset. I haven't had German blue, just talk to the people at the pet store and normally they label how hard or easy they are to care for and can give you some good pointers on the fish and what food and all the stuff you will need... if you don't already have it.

Blue rams tend to be sensitive. If you decide to get them, make sure you follow the instructions the previous owners give you to the letter. If you don't get any, ask for some. They're pretty hard to care for. If you don't want that kind of responsibility, try a type of tetra or angelfish, they're much easier to care for.

Beginners should stick with less sensitive fish, cold water fish are much better and easier to handle, like Goldfish and Guppy. Warm water fish like angel fish need slightly more care.
I wouldn't suggest getting a ram if you're a beginner.

I recommend you to try it, but get iformed first. I send some information below that I think might be useful, and follow the correct cycling process before you add the fish. check the nitrate levels you need to have in the tank too.
