I am assuming...

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!

...that Snape and Big V are mains, while people like Bellatrix, Fred, Lupin and Tonks were supports, either by their peripheral presense or the lateness of their arrival in the series

She was referring to Lupine and Snape. Snape, whether or not you liked him, was a main character. Lupine was a main character in book 3 and made appearances in books 5, 6, and 7.
Both of these characters were closer to Harry and mattered more to Harry than any of the others.

I suspect J. K. Rowling meant to bring Percy back just to kill him, but Fred got in the way. That happens. Percy's death wouldn't have wrenched the Weasley family and the readers as much as Fred's.

Snape was definitely a main character. He's been in all of the books and has played major roles in almost all of them. Snape's death was also the most emotional one - J.K spent a whole chapter explaining it as well. The other death is up for interpretation. I would say Voldermort because he is obviously a main character...killing him is one of the whole points of the harry potter books. I don't think either Lupin or Dobby were main characters even though their deaths were emotional simply because they didn't play that huge of a role in the series.
I think we can all agree that atleast 2 main characters died though. :)

This was kind of a ploy. J.K., her publicist, etc have a job and that job is to make a profit. To make a profit you run a great marketing campaign to draw people into HP mania so that they buy the book.

To say "two main characters die" is an intentionally vague statement designed to whip you and other HP readers into a frenzy - uh - which it apparently did.

You have every rite to be a little let down!

I always thought main characters meant purely harry, Ron and Hermione but she must mean reoccurring characters such as Hagrid, Lupin Sirius , I would have thought main characters would mean Lupin and Fred but then again shouldn't hedwig and Dobby be just as important. Also Bellatrix has been pretty important.Maybe this is a question only Jk could answer.

BOOK 7 SPOILERS
I think that Doby and Fred were the most prominant characters to die. I don't that she meant that only 2 would die though...just that at least 2 would die. She also said that there were be many more deaths in this last book

I think she meant Doby and Lupin. Lupin was Harry's last link to his parents so to speak becuz he was their friend. He also loved Harry and Harry felt attached to him after Sirius died. Also Dobby had helped Harry throughout the series and loved and admired him. Harry also felt a great connection to Dobby so he was really important to Harry as well.

Voldemort and Snape I think they were the only two that were in all the books and had huge parts

Hard to say, but she also said that she killed one character she didn't expect to and let one live that she didn't expect to. So maybe that's why it seems that her prior statement was false.
