I haven't heard much about it, but can it compete with H/P or any of the other big names? They seem common enough that they are worthy, but I just haven't heard much about it

I am using one for last 2 years and had no problems with it. I think you get a good bargain with reasonably lower prices.

I am typing to you on my Acer Aspire 5100 w/ Windows Vista Basic. I will have to say I was quite leary of purchasing this computer initially about 3 months ago, knowing full-well Acer's "history" and "reputation". However, I must say I was moderately impressed. Acer has really stepped-up their game quite a bit and the Aspire 5100 definitely gets my vote.

Now...if I could only go back to installing XP on this machine...

My philosopy is you can get a "lemon" from any seller at any time. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable seller who has a reputation for offering good support. Check Acer's website, see if you can contact them before purchase. Re: HP, I have had personal good experience with them regarding a quick response and a fix for my printer.

I think the company behind the product and the support they offer is more important. In reality there is little difference in the machines beyond the configuration and price. Essentially they all have the same components - made at the same places.

I have one and love it. You can do a search for "acer laptop reviews" and read for youself. The only downside of mine is that the graphics are totally shared which isn't good for gamming as most good games require dedicated graphics memory. But I don't play many games on it, but rather on my desktop.
