i have been given a computer that needs formatting..however upon start up it asks for a password..i cannot enter bios without the password and have tried the clear cmos jumper but to no avail..can anyone help?

you cannot remove tat password..the administratror or the service engineer will be havin it

Easy their is a jumper located near the battery on the motherboard just move it from the two pins it's on to the bottom two (same set of pins) leave for two seconds then put it back where it was this will kill all passwords you can reset it afterwards from the bios if you wish.

The clear cmos jumper should have done the trick. Try removing the motherboard battery and leaving it out overnight.

Clear CMOS for about a minute.. or you can remove the battery for 5 mins then put it back in.. Careful in removing the battery not to touch or hit any internal parts..
Note: Do not turn on the PC...

If someone gave you the computer, you must know them so ask them for the password.

yes you must contact the person and ask for the password

let them know that after you are done with the computer, they can change the password.
