I know they serve some function, though not clear on what that function is. However, I know very FEW men over 60 that DON'T have a prostate problem. Why can't they just be removed instead of men having to keep having biopsy after biopsy?

Well the prostate gland can be removed. Problem is this is a very very bloody surgery and most of the time the nerves that control erections are damaged leaving the man impotent. So why remove it if not necessary?

Purpose of the prostrate:

The main function of the prostate is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that, along with spermatozoa, constitutes semen. The rest of the seminal fluid is produced by the two seminal vesicles.

The prostate also contains some smooth muscles that help expel semen during ejaculation.

If you removed the prostate gland, you would no longer be able to produce semen and your ability to achive or sustain an erection and have an orgasm would also be damaged.

If you no longer want to have sex or erections, get it taken out. Otherwise, those old farts are still horny and want to be sexually functional, plus it also controls your ability to, or not to urinate so we keep them as long as we can!
