Because Americans focus on themselves rather than on the group as a whole. Americans, culturally, want what is best for themselves, thus making them "#1". This is one factor that differentiates European society from American society. European cultures tend to focus on the "good of the group" (ie, socialized health care, education through college, etc.) where as Americans are still in fear of "socialized" programs, even though they have many prosperous one in their society today (education through high school, defense, etc.).

Conservatives don't obsess about being Number One...they are too busy producing. Only Democrats/Liberals have this obsession, hating the fact that we are Number One. Number One comes naturally to a society that is governed as a free-market, capitalist society where citizens have incentives to do more, be more and create efficient solutions to our problems, fulfilling our needs. The Dems hate it that we show up, every time, the Socialist societies of the world.

It's partly because we simplify what being #1 means -- we look at the areas where we are in the lead, and ignore all the areas where we aren't, because that makes us feel bad. It's also because we're a frighteningly competitive culture--just look at our sports subculture--and somehow base a great deal of our sense of self worth with having supported someone who is NOT US but who does, indeed, "win." Depending on the criteria for winning (I mean, how many times have people of EITHER party said, "Well, he didn't get the popular vote, but that's not what matters" or "Well, he got the popular vote, and that's what matters!"

#1 is relative.

We're a country founded on ambition and competition- that trait goes all the way back to the original colonies. It's actually a mixed bag, as it does as much good as harm. Yes, the greed can be damaging, but the innovation that results can benefit a lot of people, and has raised the quality of life all around the world.

It's because the United States of America has the strongest military ever in terms of it's military technology. However, it is nowhere near number one in education, it has less nukes than at least 1 country and it has a lot less manpower than several other countries. Countries that still levitate towards the communist ideology.

Your question is hard to answer because it's not clear exactly what you are referring to, but what I want to know is, what's wrong with wanting to be the best? America has always been the great defender of the world, the example of the good life, land of opportunity. We aren't perfect, but damn we're closer than the rest.
