Please forget any inches per gallon junk you may hear, every bit of that is bogus.

3 fancy goldfish like you describe will do very well in a 40 gallon tank assuming you have good filtration and keep up with the weekly water changes and gravel cleanings they need.

Zebra Danios, White Cloud Mountain Minnows and guppies are all good tank mates for goldfish. There are also a few types of cory catfish that will do well in a cooler tank, but be careful to research them and buy only those that can do well in the cooler temperatures.

You can usually put three fancies in a 40 gallon. Those guys already sound big and may grow a little more, so make sure they have space to grow and dont dirty it too fast or die. Zebra danios would not go well with goldfish, they are best by themselves. If big gorgeous goldfish make an "empty" tank for you, then you are not a goldfish person and should get a community tank. I love my tank of goldies, cause I enjoy watching them individually, they are so cute and beauitufl.

i was told by the professional aquarium/fish people here in green bay that goldfish, cause they are a dirty fish.. produce alot of waste and are gravel feeders.. should have 10 gallons per inch..

I have a 50 gallon tank with 3 fish in it though.. my largest is 7-8 inches.. the next is 7ish .. just a bit smaller and the last is only 2 inches.. i use a filter meant for a 120 gallon tank and change the filters on it once a month. you could put a snail or algae eatter in the tank too.. but be careful if your fish rest on the bottom alot.. mine do.. they algae eatter might suck on the goldfish cause of their slimcoats..

I wouldnt suggest any other fish cause your gold fish will get huge! and little fish might get eaten and cause a larger waste load.. leading to algae issues and infections..

Yes, it should be okay, but make sure that your filter is big enough. Goldfish are VERY dirty fish. They will fog up your tank in a day without a filter. Also do water changes at least 2-3 times a week to make sure the ammonia doesn't get out of hand. I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 female bettas, and another 10 gallon with 6 guppies, and I do 50% water chages every day. It's allot of work but as a breeder, I really don't mind:) Hope you get some nice goldfish! And remember, they are REALLY dirty fish:O

Hi Hassan,
Goldfish can be awesome fish, and a 40 gallon would be perfect for 3 fancy goldfish, not the typical goldies with a normal body. Those typical shaped goldies are comets, which grow to be 12+" long, and a single one needs a 55 gallon tank. So you could have 3 of the one of the following groups-

Group 1 (fancies that are like comets except have longer tails and bigger bellies)
-fantail goldfish http://z.about.com/d/freshaquarium/1/0/I/N/goldfish29.jpg
-veiltail goldfish http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/4468/veiltail.jpg

Group 2 (fancies

Yes you can, assuming that you service your filter regularly, change the water regularly, and monitor for changes in behaviour. Zebra Danios and White Cloud Mountain Minnows make great tankn mates for goldfish, but make sure the goldfish don't outgrow the tank andn eat them.

what type of goldfish, remember that feede goldfish wll get over 24 inches.

so you can keep them in a 40 but it will only be for a few months. they will need another upgrade by a year.

3 in a 40 gallon would be fine if you clean it regularly. 2 would be optimal. i wouldn't put other small fish in with them as they will eat anything they can catch.

Goldfish are best by themselves, putting other type of fish would be unfair to your goldfish, since they can get sick with diseases easily. They're also fancy golfish, which are slower to get to their food. I recommend you to read this info, it will clear some of your questions.
