I have three weeks left of my pre-installed trial version of Norton 2007 left on my Dell laptop. But I just bought a version on Buy.com of Norton Internet Security 2007 for $59.99 (with $50 of mail-in rebates, however). Should I install it now or wait for the trial version to expire? Does it matter? Will I need to install all kinds of updates to this packaged version I just got? Thanks in advance for thoughtful responses.

Regardless of when you install it, the product that you purchased will run for 365 days from the date you installed it. The trial will run and protect you system the same up until it expires. It will usually continue to "protect" your system even after this date, but it will not update itself, so you're NOT protected from new viruses. Since you purchased the same product, there will be little to "renewing" it. Once it expires (the option is available now as well), you can activate it with a code, which you already have in the new software (probably on the back of the CD envelope). Just type in this code, because all it is looking for is a code that it can activate online. The product is the same otherwise.

You might as well run the trial up to the last day and get the most for what you actually paid for. Whether you know it or not, you "paid" for it in the price of the PC.

You might as well want to start over with the new software. It won't matter if you wait for the trial to expire or not. Just throw in the discs and mail in the rebates. Once you install, you will definetly have to go through the updates installation, but after that, you will be good to go.
The sooner you get around to doing this, the less chance you have of falling behind of updates and possible infections. Good luck with Norton.

Since Norton is an antivirus software, I do have to recommend one other piece of useful software to keep your computer running smoothly.

Spybot: Search and Destroy
If you run this program once a week or every two weeks, it helps rid you of spyware. This is competely free and will work along with Norton to support your computer.

The trial version didn't cost you anything, so you won't be losing anything to get rid of it.

Personally, I would uninstall the trial version, then Restart before installing the purchased version. You don't want any conflict with key numbers.

After you install, Restart again, then immediately update and run a full scan (to cover the brief period of time you were unprotected between uninstall and install).

The update is necessary because the CD is only valid to the date it was put on disk. When you set your preferences, be sure to set "automatic update" because scammers are out there 24/7 and you always want the latest information.

Well if you want to make full use of the trial then wait for it to expire (they are free 3 weeks) and the one you bought should only start when you activate it so then you have 1 year and 3 weeks.

Hmm.....I usually like to save money, but since you already bought it, I'd say install it now. They'll probably be brand new features for you to use and you won't want to wait.
