Hi, were going to travel to the states soon, and I'm the only one in my family who is under 21. If I am older than 18 and under 21 can I go out to pubs just not be served alcohol? do they even accept forigen ID's?
Thanks :)

It is highly dependent on the club. If the are bars purely they will often check IDs at the door and not let anyone under 18 enter. However, there are bar & grills and some clubs which check IDs when the drinks are ordered and anyone can enter but only over 21 can drink. This is different in every state, county, and city according to ordinances/laws.

In Texas, for example, there are large dance halls which allow whole families to enter. They usually use a wrist band or some other device to identify non drinking customers.

Check with the facility you want to go to prior to going. Also make sure you have photo ID, so your passport is usually a good for of identification.

It depends on the bar. Most bars are 21 and over, so you won't be able to get in. Most bars use this restriction because it's easier and safer for them if everyone inside is allowed to drink, and there's no way an underage person can get their hands on alcohol there.
However, some clubs/bars/restaurants are 18 and over or have no age limit at all. But generally they focus on other activities, such as a stage performance or serving food.

The bouncers/doormen/bartenders are usually pretty good about checking IDs, and will check foreign IDs very carefully (since they are seen more rarely and therefore easier to fake). They will accept them, however, especially if you have a parent or guardian who will verify your age or take responsibility.

It depends on the type of bar. Some will do not mind if you are under 21 but obviously they will not serve you alcohol. At night however, especially on the weekend you will find doormen on bars in the cities and they will not let you in if you are under age.

Yes, the majority of places will accept Id's issued in other countries but only drivers licenses. The people behind the bars and the doormen are used to seeing these form of Id's however they are not legal proof in the United States so they do not have to accept them, to be on the safe side carry your passport and that goes for the rest of your family also, because although they may appear to look over 21, a lot of places have a "No ID, No Alcohol" policy regardless of age.

You must be 21 to enter an establishment that is designed specifically for drinking. Even if you are not drinking.

The exceptions are in Minnesota, Arizona and Alaska. In these states you may be in the bar when under 21. In Alaska and Arizona, you cannot drink... In Minnesota, you can drink if your parents are with you.

Some establishments operate as restaurants and bars, and the under 21 crowd must leave by a certain time in the evening. The times are posted for these types of businesses.

Foreign ID can be used, but you'll get less hassle if you use your passport for ID.

Have a nice trip to America!

Deffinately call ahead. Some bars won't even accept a foreign ID, bring your passport along as well, just in case. And most of the time, if a bar serves food they will let you in if you're 18.

Depends on the place. Some allow people under 21 in and others don't. The best thing to do is to call ahead and check. They can also tell you about foreign IDs too.

Most of the clubs in my area (Myrtle Beach, SC) are 18 to party and 21 to drink.

From what I know you probably wont get in. There are some places I have been to that allow it,. but they are usual music venues that just happen to serve alcohol. But go with the first guys info and call ahead.
