Well, it might help to know the Operating System (98, 2000, XP, etc.) and file format (NTFS, FAT) to get it exact, but I'll try. You can open a command prompt and type in chkdsk /f to have chkdsk run and then try defrag again. To open a command prompt, go to Start - Run - and type in cmd. You can also run a chkdsk in Windows by going to My Computer, right click on the C: drive, choose properties, the "Tools" tab and under Error checking try to check the drive for errors. If that completes successfully, and it will probably ask you to reboot to complete, then try defrag. There are times when the problem may keep re-occuring and are usually noted by Microsoft. I have included a link to such an article in the event it applies to your setup. Also, try to make sure you do not have any other programs running in the background that may disturb defrag. You should also be able to go into Safe Mode and run defrag if you continue to have a problem in normal mode. Good luck!

Chdsk is a program that checks for and fixes errors on the disk

If you want to use the defrag simply change the Chdsk path from :/c to something else then try.

Hope this helps

Defrag is telling you to run Scandisk first. I usually do this anyway -
>First, I review the Recycle Bin and delete files manually (sometimes there might be something I want to keep for a while).
>Second, I run Scandisk or Error Check.
>Last, I run defrag.
I try to do this every other week - the more frequently you run them, the less time they take.

It tells you what to do...

Open a dos prompt (command prompt) and type in the exact command:
chdsk /f
and press 'enter'.

Shut the DOS window and start the defragmenter again.
