Most of the problem is pain from uterine spasm. This occurs to expel the shed lining. Of course there are the other problems of mood disturbance, breast tenderness and fluid retention, which are also hormonal.

The muscles in the wall of your uterus contract to expel the blood, just the same as when you are having a baby and the muscles contract to make it come out. Except having a baby is longer and more concentrated - don't let that put you off - the end result is worth all the pain, ie a beautiful baby!!

Normal period pain is caused by the womb contracting but very severe cramps can be ovarian cysts!

let's put it this way. imagine a piece of flesh being torn away from another piece of flesh wouldn't it hurt? same in this case the flesh is being pulled away from the uterus lining thus causing the pain
