One of the Death Eaters fired a spell that missed its intended target and hit a wall which exploded. Fred was crushed to death in the debris.

In the big battle at the school he has a duel with one of the deat eaters. On a side note for the people that answered about you beeing a spoiler and telling you some people havent finished/read it yet. You know you guys dont have to click on, read, or answer these kind of questiions! lol

One Death Eater (I think, Rookwood) fired a curse that missed where he intended it to hit really, and it hit a wall and the wall crushed down, while crushing Fred too !!!

Its sooooo not fair that she killes Fred. I cant believe JK Rowling. How can she do this to George ? I mean, can you imagine how CRUSHED he is to find out that his TWIN brother is dead ! Arughh, I totally HATE JK Rowling for doing it !

he, ron and percy were thrown against the wall from a death eater's blast. harry and hermione were buried but got out alive. ron and percy survived too but fred was the only person who didnt. *tears*
