...South America, albeit having different countries within it, is still a bigger part of the two continents of America than the United States. (not to mention Central America of course). On the same page, Canada is also a part of North America.
When we look at a map of the United States, that is all it is. The United States. George Bush is not the President of America. He is President of the United States.

but I prefer to refer to those in the United States (including myself) as 'United Staters'...I shall work on this as I progress towards the presidency about 15 -16 years from now....

Actually, our country is the United States of America.
Which is a misnomer, given that the United States of Mexico and the United States of Brazil are both also on the continents known as America.
We just have louder media, so we claimed the name.

No, he is the President of the United States of America. Seeing as the word America is in the nation's name American seems to fit, wouldn't you say? Perhaps you should look at more accurate maps.

You are right, but North America is larger than South America.
Further, we are the United States of America, and George Bush is the president of the USA. We shorten the sentence to "Americans" because it is easier and lazy.

So you are agreeing that they are Americans. When a person says "American", they are literally correct that they are from the Americas (2 continents). But when they do so in English, with a United States accent, it is implied that they are also referring to being an American from the US.

That's not true...
Some people call themselves AmeriKKKans, others Amerikans, others call citizens, commie facist pinko freaks, or right wing nuts. Still others call us the Police of the World. People with speech impediments call themselves Amuricans. Still others are not satisfied with just being 'American,' and have to call themselves Afro-Americans, or Italian-Americans or such.
George Bush is NOT the president of America or the United States, as he never was elected... He was appointed by the Supremes (yes Supremes, they might as well be a singing group) Court. In reality, Bush actually thinks he's KING!

I think it's the simple fact that it's a much shorter way to say United States of America. Not only people in the US say it, foreigners do too. A lot of people say "The States", which is more appropriate.
