You can find details of different areas on this website, which also includes school performance and crime rates.
http://www.findaproperty.com/areadetails.aspx?edid=00&salerent=0&areaid=0196
This is for Muswell Hill N10, which as someone said above is a great area to live, safe for kids (lots of young families live in the area, same applies to nearby Crouch End).
It has comments from people living in the area so you get an idea of the feeling, you can check different areas.
I would recommend looking in zone 3 or further out because it's much more affordable and (well, depending on the area, I am talking of leafy suburbs) the quality of life can be better than in central London. Apart from the areas above in North London, you may like to check Twickenham or Richmond or Kingston in West London.
This is the website of the MET, Metropolitan Police, to check crime rates so you get an idea... Personal safety can be an issue in some areas so go and get the feeling of the place in person before you buy/rent. In general I think it's a good idea not to live in an area too near large council estates.
Oh, and to check journey options and times, you can use the journey planner on
www.tfl.gov.uk
I hope this helps :)

Depends on what you are looking for. I live in Crystal Palace - the bit covered by Bromley Borough Council. I like it. It's small and cute, nice main road with some nice restaurants and a lovely, massive park. Good train service into central London Lots of schools nearby but I suggest you look at upmystreet.com and type in SE19 as the postal code will give you all the info you need about the area . . .
It is relatively cheap still and the tube will come in a few years which will give house prices a boost so a good time to invest
hope that helps you . .

Muswell hill, crouch end, hampsted are all good
Also take into account things like night bus routes from then they get a little older and want to go clubbing
www.accessallareas.org
For hippy like clubs.
www.thechurch.co.uk for wild but safe
swimming, bowling allies and cinemas are common.
The three I mentioned have a big park nearby and fairly safe.
