Take it to the bank.

Carter? The smartest and most educated? The Naval Academy is a decent place to go to school, but I wouldn't say he had the most robust education of any president of all time.
More education usually just means more brainwashing. (It's taken many years of concerted effort for me to recover from my 10 years of higher education in private and "elite" schools)
For my money, the best GOP candidate is Ron Paul. He has a clear understanding of economics and foreign policy. He is committed to the populist philosophy of freedom and liberty. He may not be the smartest candidate, or he may be. I don't think it really matters; what's more important, he is honest and a man of integrity. He will be getting my vote.

I don't consider him smart - he may be crafty and a fair actor but if he is the "smartest" candidate that the GOP has to offer then the GOP is in a world of trouble.
BTW - how does his dumping his wife and kids for a 30-something blonde bombshell square with GOP family values?

The smartest of the GOP wannabes is almost certainly Newt Gingrich, who's looking for an opening but not yet a candidate. Of course, newt is also more than slightly nutty.

Who cares about raw intelligence? Carter was by far the smartest and most intelligent president of all time, if you look at educational degree and achievment, yet he was by far the greatest failure of the 20th centurty, and easily one of the five worst presidents of all time.
Teddy R. was self educated, not very "smart" per se, yet a great president. Hell, Truman did not even go to college, stuttered and spoke nervously, losts of people considered him a "bumpkin", and he left office as one of the most unpopular presidents ever....yet now is viewed as a good president.
Thompson, of all the Rep. Candidates, is the most anti-federalist of the candidates. He took down a corrupt governor, and helped take down Nixon. He places his family above his politics, and like Crocket, is not ashamed to admit to his voters when he makes a mistake on a bill.
He is a good man and will make a good candidate.

No, but the GOP doesn't require brains. Acting is all that's necessary these days. Republicans, are you really okay with that?
