I moved New York state and bought a 99 Buick Century from a dealer (with 1 month warranty) 4 months ago. Recently the check engine light of the car was on, so I went to a repair shop. However, the problem is not fixed after several trials! First time they changed a gas pump neck, a few days later, the light on again. Then they told me the canister and valve has leak and changed that for me. These repairs cost me 600 bucks already, but a few days later, the light is on AGAIN. This time they told me something wrong with my gas pressure sensor and want to charge me ~$180 for that. And they just told me they can't guarantee what will happen in the future. It makes me feel so bad... Could you give me any suggestions? I appreciate it !!!

Number 1, you should not just let them tell you anything. If your car is a 99 or newer, you can more than likely go buy a scanner for around $150 and it will tell you exactly what is wrong with your vehicle. This is what I did with my truck...it's a 99 silverado. Anyway, the scanner will provide you with a code and then you can check what the code correlates with. If you don't want to get your own scanner, then I would suggest that you take it down to Advance or another car parts place and they will usually scan it for free.

Bit of advice, the check engine light can be cleared out by anyone with one of these scanners and it will remain off for a day or so and then come right back on...you were being screwed over...get a new mechanic

I would not go back to these guys. Find another shop to do the work.

Take the car into a auto parts place like Autozone and have them read the error codes that are turning on the light. They should also sugest what may be the defective part. And all of this is free.

When you go to another shop you can tell then the code and they will replace the proper parts. Or armed with the knowledge, you may be able to replace the bad part yourself and save a bunch more money.

Good luck.

first of all never go back to them, next check your local city laws, some cities have laws that protect consumers from crappy mechanics you may end up getting what ever needs fixed done for just 25-50 bucks more if you are in the right city
