At least 12. You usually get about 10 % "waste" from each box. Also, you would ideally want to have a box left over for future repairs. That way they would be from the same lot and would come closer to matching than if you had to go and try to find more. Plus, if you are doing it yourself, then "accidents" will be sure to happen!
Good luck! ps. if you are doing it yourself, be sure to get the right kind of nails and nail gun!

As already pointed out you'll need 11.4 cartons plus waste. At 12 carton you'll have an extra .6 cartons for waste which comes to just over 5%. This is the bare minimum to have for waste so depending on your skill and the wood quality you may not have enough with 12 cartons.
If it's a locally stocked item you have two options. The first is to buy 12 cartons and buy an extra if/when you run short. The second option would be to buy 13 cartons and return one if you didn't need it.
If it's a special order item you may want to order the 13th carton just in case. It also gives you the ability to be a little more choosy in discarding undesirable pieces. You probably can't return the extra carton if it's a special order.
Also ask the person you're purchasing how the quality of the wood is. I have one brand I sell that on which I consistently had leftover full cartons so I've lowered the waste factor on that brand. On others I order extra to throw away ugly or short pieces and end up just having enough to finish.
I hate running short on a job because I can't bill it until it's done, it causes numerous scheduling problems and most of my distributors charge $50 to $60 for a delivery regardless of the size.

Get the 13 boxes you will need for doing the job right. You will inevitably have waste that can't be avoided. And let's just say you do only use 12...take that box back. It is MUCH easier than needing it, not having it, and even worse...going to the store to find the item is out of stock and that the next batch may not EXACTLY match the color. Have fun!............

You need to multiple the length by the width of the room (17x13.5) = square footage. . Do the math and then add an extra box just in case you mess up a few pieces. If you do not need it you can always take it back unopened for a refund. Just keep the receipt.

Just over 11 boxes, plus you need to plan for waste, so 12 boxes should do it.

(Length)(Width)=[Sq.Ft of Room]

[ (Sq. Ft. of Room) / (Sq. Ft. of one Box) ] = (Number Of Boxes Required)

You require 12 box to cover the room, you'll have a few extra for mistakes too.

the room is 229.5 sq. ft. Do the math,,,sigh. 20.1 divided into 229.5 allow 10 % for waste NO LESS than 11.41791 boxes of flooring
